The pair of photos show the Pedersen glacier in the Kenai mountains of Alaska in 1917 and 2005, revealing how much is has retreated in that time. A century ago the glacier calved into a lake near the sea, which has now filled with glacial sediment deposited by melt water and ice and turned into a grassland. They were released as promotion for a new NASA app that allows you to track some of the changes we are wreaking around the globe using juxtaposed images. Most glaciers worldwide are in retreat due to global warming, depriving us of much mountain beauty and endangering future water resources for hundreds of millions worldwide. Being a child of the Alps I have seen it myself in several places, sometimes to a shocking extent within a mere half decade.
